Christine Arlene
Peterson Vaughn
Jul 24, 1932 — Mar 16, 2026
Sumter, SC
Mother Christine Arlene Peterson Vaughn, affectionately known as “Rosebud,” entered eternal rest on Monday, March 16, 2026, in Greenville, SC, while visiting with family. Born on July 24, 1932, in Sumter, South Carolina, she was the firstborn child of the late Alma Atkinson Peterson Jenkins and Allen Peterson. Her early years were spent between South Carolina and New York where she graduated from Brooklyn’s Girls High School.
Mother Vaughn was married to the late Marion Vaughn, and their union was blessed with four daughters and two sons before his death in 1968. While raising their six children she continued her education at Morris College in Sumter, SC, which laid the foundation for over 30 years of service to the Sumter School System, including Moore School, Willow Drive Elementary and retiring from Sumter High School.
She enjoyed serving not only in the local school system, but also in her community. As a founding member and president of the “Walnut Hill Community Club” she advocated for various beautification projects, improved lighting conditions, safe school bus stop locations, SWRTA for adult riders, and other safety enhancements for her community.
A woman of strong faith, Mother Vaughn was a lifelong member of First Baptist Missionary Church. While actively participating, she would witness generations of her descendants baptized through the late Dr. William S. Randolph, and current pastor, the Reverend George P. Windley Jr. She would enjoy traveling with “her” Pastor, and the church to many services and engagements; and looked forward to occasional fellowship travels of her often “bus ministry” cohorts, who would grow to become what her grandson would often refer to as the “Golden Girls.” There, she witnessed her grandson, Reverend Aaron R. Vaughn be licensed into ministry. In 2022, she was bestowed the distinguished honor of “Mother of the Church” and would eventually celebrate her 93rd birthday on the church lawn with family, friends, and fellow church members by her side; she loved it!
In addition to her husband, she is preceded in death by her son, Alva Delray Vaughn, her beloved mother, Alma Atkinson Peterson Jenkins, father, Allen Peterson; grandmother, Florence Kendrick Atkinson Willis Thompson; stepmother, Dora Albritton Peterson; stepfather, Levi Jenkins; sister, Patricia Peterson Keller, and a host of other cherished family members and friends.
Her loving memory will be cherished by her son, Alan Kenneth “Kenny” Vaughn; daughters: Ingrid Renee “Rae” Vaughn Richburg, Cynthia Merle Vaughn, Pamela Crystal Vaughn Little, and Tonya Lavern Vaughn Singleton; brother, Jerry A. Peterson; her grandson whom she raised as her own, Cory J. Vaughn; and her grandson, Rev. Aaron R. Vaughn, who faithfully cared for her in her final years; a host of grands, great-grands, great-great-grands, nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends. All whose lives she ministered to with love, while traversing life’s journey of “forever moments” in her life of 93 years.
